Voice Recorder (“we”, “us”) is a Chrome extension that records audio: your voice, a tab’s sound, or your computer’s sound. It has no account and no servers of ours. Your recordings stay on your computer. We don’t show ads, don’t sell or share data, and don’t track the pages you visit. This policy covers the extension; the website voicerecorder.page has its own policy.
What the extension keeps, and where
- Recordings and their history (titles, dates, lengths, formats and waveforms) are kept in your browser’s storage on your computer. They are not synced and never uploaded. While you record, the recording is written to that storage every second, so that a crash or a closed browser loses almost nothing; once it is saved, that copy is deleted.
- A finished recording waits on the recorder until you save or discard it; one never saved is deleted after 7 days. Saved recordings stay in the history until you delete them, the storage limit you set removes the oldest, or the automatic cleanup you can turn on removes old ones.
- Save downloads the file to your computer, to Chrome’s download folder or wherever you choose.
- Settings are kept in Chrome’s storage for extensions. Recording settings (such as the format, the quality, the volumes and the chosen microphone) use Chrome’s synced storage, which Chrome copies to the other computers where you’re signed in to Chrome with sync turned on. Google provides Chrome Sync under Google’s own privacy policy. Everything else stays on this computer.
- Figures for the feedback pages, kept on this computer only: the day the extension was installed, how many recordings you have saved, which recording types you have used, the microphone’s permission and why it last failed to start, the last recording that was interrupted or could not be converted, and how the welcome page ended (whether the microphone was allowed, failed or skipped, and whether the recorder was opened from it). They are sent nowhere on their own; see “What reaches us” below.
None of this is sent to us.
What the extension records, and when
It records only between Start and Stop, and only what you chose:
- The microphone, for Voice and the types with your voice. Chrome asks your permission first.
- A tab’s sound, for Tab and Voice + Tab: the tab where you clicked the extension’s icon or pressed its shortcut, and no other. Nothing on the page is read.
- Your computer’s sound, for System and Voice + System, from a screen share you choose in Chrome’s own window. The extension stops the share’s picture at once and records only its sound; nothing of your screen is kept.
The levels shown while you record, the warning when no sound arrives, the waveforms and the crop are all worked out on your computer. The welcome page’s microphone check only shows how loud the microphone hears you, and keeps nothing.
What reaches us: feedback
The extension sends nothing to us on its own. Feedback goes through two pages of this website, which send it to our feedback form, a Google Form:
- Send feedback opens when you choose Support & Feedback in Settings, or rate the extension 1 to 3 stars.
- The page shown after removing the extension opens when you remove it: the extension tells Chrome in advance which page to open then.
Both open in the extension’s language where this website has it, and in English otherwise.
- Technical details. The extension puts them in the page’s link: where the page was opened from, the extension’s version, your browser and operating system with their versions, who installed the extension (you or an administrator) and about how long ago, rough figures in ranges (about how many recordings you have saved and have in your history, how much space they take), which recording types you have used, the microphone’s permission and why it last failed, the last recording that was interrupted or could not be converted, how the welcome page ended, whether the extension’s icon is pinned, your recording settings, and Chrome’s language. They never include your recordings, their titles, the pages you visit, or anything that identifies you. They sit in the part of the link after #, which your browser doesn’t send to any server when it opens the page. The page lists them under “Technical details sent with your answer”.
- What the page sends to the form: the reason you pick, the text you type when you press Send, the technical details, and the page’s address with whether the answer went with Send or on leaving. It sends this once per visit: when you press Send, or when you leave or close the page after picking a reason. The page shown after removing the extension also sends the technical details once when you leave or close it without answering, so we can see when and why people leave. Text you type is sent only when you press Send.
- No name, email address, identifier, cookie or recording is sent. Google, which hosts the form, receives your IP address with the submission, as with any form. Cloudflare, which hosts this website, receives the technical details of each request (such as your IP address and browser) to deliver the page; see the website’s policy.
- What you choose and write is used only to understand and fix problems. Answers are kept in the developer’s Google account, as long as they help improve the extension. To have yours deleted, write to us.
- Earlier versions opened the Google Form itself, with the technical details filled in: version 1.10.0 also filled in your time zone and the first languages your browser asks pages in; 1.9.0 and before filled in only the version, where the form was opened from, and the browser. Nothing became an answer there until you pressed Submit.
Google hosts the form under Google’s privacy policy.
Other pages the extension opens
After an install, the extension opens its welcome page, a page of its own (not after an administrator’s install). When you rate it 4 or 5 stars, it opens its reviews in the Chrome Web Store, with a tag in the link saying whether the stars came from the prompt or from Settings and how many; the store is run by Google under its own privacy policy. This policy and the feedback pages are on this website.
Permissions
- Storage, and unlimited storage: to keep your recordings, their history and your settings on your computer, long recordings included.
- Tab capture: to record a tab’s sound, only the tab you chose and only while recording.
- Offscreen: to record and convert audio in a background page while the side panel is open or closed.
- Side panel: to show the recorder in Chrome’s side panel.
- Alarms: to keep the recording’s background work running until it is saved.
- System display: to center the window that asks for the microphone on your screen.
The extension reads no web page and asks for no access to websites. Its keyboard shortcuts need no permission.
What we don’t do
No ads, no analytics or tracking inside the extension, no selling or sharing of data, and no code loaded from elsewhere.
Children
Voice Recorder is not directed at children under 13, and it collects no personal information from anyone through the extension itself. Schools that install it for students should know that only feedback reaches us: what the feedback pages send, as described above.
Your rights
You can delete your recordings in the extension at any time; removing the extension deletes what it keeps on that computer. Where data protection laws give you rights over your information (such as access, correction or deletion of a feedback answer), write to us and we’ll act on your request.
Changes
When this policy changes, the date above changes with it, and important changes are announced in the extension.
