How to Add Audio to Google Slides

Google Slides can play audio, but it can’t record it. Record your voice-over here as an MP3, put it in Google Drive, and insert it on any slide.

Press the button and allow the microphone when your browser asks.

Step 1: Record your narration

  1. Keep the recorder on MP3. 128 or 192 kbps is plenty for a voice.
  2. Click Start recording, allow the microphone, and read your first slide.
  3. Click Stop and save, listen back, crop the silence at the ends, and click Download. Name it after the slide, for example slide-1.mp3.

Record one file per slide: if you stumble, you redo only that slide.

Step 2: Upload the file to Google Drive

Open Google Drive, click New › File upload, and choose your MP3. Slides can only insert audio that is in Drive.

Step 3: Insert the audio in Google Slides

  1. Open your presentation and select the slide.
  2. Click Insert › Audio.
  3. Find your file in My Drive or Recent, select it and click Select.
  4. An audio icon appears on the slide. Drag it where you want it.

Step 4: Choose how it plays

Select the audio icon and click Format options. Under audio playback you can:

Step 5: Share the audio with your audience

When you share the presentation, Slides offers to share the audio files too. Accept it, or anyone without access to the file will see the icon but hear nothing. You can also share the files from Drive.

Record narration with your slides in view

The Voice Recorder extension opens in Chrome’s side panel, right next to your presentation, so you can read each slide while you record it. Every recording is saved to a library where you can rename, crop and download it as MP3.

  • Records your microphone, the sound of a browser tab, or both in one file
  • Records your computer’s sound on Windows and macOS 14.2 or later
  • A library of your recordings: rename, search, crop, play at 0.5×–2× and download
  • MP3 up to 320 kbps, WAV or WebM, with pause and resume
  • No account. Nothing is uploaded.

Questions and answers

Can Google Slides record audio?

No. Slides can only insert audio files that are in your Google Drive. Record the audio with a recorder such as the one on this page, then insert the file.

Which audio formats does Google Slides accept?

MP3 and WAV files stored in Google Drive. Choose MP3 here: it is smaller and loads faster in a presentation.

Why can’t others hear the audio in my presentation?

They need access to the audio file in Google Drive. When you share the presentation, Slides offers to share its audio too; accept it, or share the file from Drive.

Can I add a different recording to each slide?

Yes. Record one short file per slide and insert each on its own slide. Short clips are easier to redo than one long narration.

Can I make the audio play automatically?

Yes. Select the audio icon on the slide and open Format options. Under audio playback, choose to start it automatically instead of on click; you can also loop it or hide the icon while presenting.
