    About MP4

MP4 is a video file. Its sound is usually AAC audio stored in the same file, next to the picture. Phone videos, screen recordings, camera clips, and videos you downloaded or exported from an editor are usually MP4.

Only the sound is kept: the video is left out, so the file gets much smaller. A 10-minute video gives an MP3 of about 14 MB at 192 kbps.

    Quality and size

WAV is saved as 16-bit PCM at 48 kHz, in mono or stereo like the original. The result is about 11.5 MB a minute in stereo.

    Private by design

Converters that upload your file keep a copy on someone else’s server, at least for a while. Here the conversion happens on your device, with your browser’s own audio decoders and an MP3 encoder that runs in the page. Nothing is uploaded, and it works on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebooks.

    Questions and answers

Is this MP4 to WAV converter free and safe?

Yes. It’s free, with no sign-up and no watermark. Your MP4 files are converted by your browser on your device and never uploaded, so nobody else sees them.

Can I convert a video from my phone?

Yes. Copy the video to your computer, or open this page on the phone and pick it from your files. Long videos take a while, because the whole file is read in the browser.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Choose or drop as many as you like. They convert one after another, and each gets its own Download button.

How large can a file be?

The whole file is read into your browser’s memory, so very large files depend on your device. Audio up to about an hour, and videos up to a few hundred megabytes, work well on most computers.
